The Federal Pay Scale for 2021 and 2022 and How It Works

The Federal Pay Scale, often called the basic pay rate and the general plan (GS) pay system, is a payment system that affects over 1.5 million federal civilian white-collar workers in the United States. This is by far the most widely used payment system around the globe. Jobs in professional, administrative technical, technical and clerical sectors can be filled using this ability.

The pay rates that are the basic, which include the Federal Pay Scale, are divided by 15 grade in total. The pay grade for each job is assigned to each position by the Federal Agency based on the qualifications required, the complexity of the task to do and the level of accountability.

For each of the pay classes, there are a total of ten step rates. Each stage is a rise or decrease in compensation of around 3 percent. Based on their length of service and job performance Federal employees can advance to the next level in each grade level that they’re assigned.

The Distinction Between the Federal Pay Scales in 2021 and in 2022

As mentioned previously, the general schedule pay system is altered once a year, as explained in the previous section. Furthermore, the change may have an impact on the salaries and pay of employees in the private sector too.

Additionally, federal employees are able to earn locality pay while working in their respective places of work. It’s the percentage that is paid based on where you reside. The rate is set from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the United States via a survey which they conduct.

Similar to previous years, there is a discrepancy between the pay scales for federal employees in 2021 and 2022 that is similar to previous years. Although the basic pay rates for 2022 have not yet been released however, it is the intention of the Biden Administration announced at the close of August 2021 it was expected that the following rise in the federal pay scale across all job categories will be 2.2 percent, effective immediately. Locality pay employees will receive more than 0.5 percent of their annual wage, resulting in a pay rise of up to 2.7 percent in certain cases. Although there’s been no official announcement about this rate of pay, it is likely to affect the military too.

Consider the comparison between this and the federal rise given to the last United States presidential administration. Donald Trump has suggested a 2.6 percent increase in the yearly government salary until 2021 that will be effective immediately. Having said that, in the past, United States Congress has finally increased the amount to 3.1 percentage of the GDP. This makes the planned rise to be expected next year seem low in contrast, but the civil service personnel who are geographically qualified will get extra locality pay because of the increase in compensation for location.

The Federal Pay Scale goes into effect on the 1st day of January every year it is implemented. It should be noted time that the change to be implemented in 2022 will not be officially announced until the president signs an executive order putting the change in place in full. Based on the precedent established by previous presidents, executive order will likely be released before the end of the year.
