The Federal Pay Scale for 2021 and 2022 and How It Works

The Federal Pay Scale, often known as the basic pay rate or the general schedule (GS) Pay system, is a payment system that affects greater than 1.5 million civilian white-collar federal employees across the United States. This is by far the most used payment system around the globe. The jobs in the administrative, professional technical, technical and clerical sectors are all filled using this skill.

The basic pay rates, which include the Federal Pay Scale, are broken down in 15 grades total. The grade of each job is assigned by the federal agency on the basis of the required credentials, the complexity of the job to be completed and the extent of the responsibility.

In each of the pay levels, there is 10 step rates. Each step represents an increase or decrease in pay of approximately 3 percent. Based on the length of their service and the performance of their job federal employees could be promoted to the next step in the grade they are assigned to.

The Distinction Between the Federal Pay Scales in 2021 and in 2022

As mentioned previously the general schedule pay system is altered once a year, as explained in the previous section. In addition, the change could affect the salaries and wages of employees employed in private companies too.

Furthermore, federal personnel can earn locality pay during their time at their places of work. It is the percentage rate that you receive based on the location you reside in. The rate is set by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the United States via a survey that they undertake.

Like previous years, there is a discrepancy between the pay scales of the federal government in 2021 and 2022 that is similar to the previous years. While the pay rates for basic employees for 2022 have not yet been announced however, the President Biden Administration declared at the closing of August 2021 it was expected that the following rise in the federal pay scale across the board will be 2.2 percent from the moment it was announced. Employees who get locality pay will be paid the additional 0.5 percent on their annual wage, resulting in a pay rise that could reach 2.7 percent in some cases. Although there’s been no official announcement about this rate of pay, it is likely to affect the military too.

Consider the comparison between this and the federal rise that was granted to the previous United States presidential administration. Donald Trump has suggested a 2.6 percent rise in the annual salary of the government for 2021 and it will take effect immediately. In the meantime it was the United States Congress eventually increased it up to 3.1 percent of GDP. This makes the planned rise to be expected next year seem low to be honest, however, geographically qualifying civilian personnel will receive additional locality compensation because of the increase in compensation for location.

The Federal Pay Scale goes into effect on the 1st of January of each year in which it is implemented. It should be noted once to remind us that the adjustments that will be in effect for 2022 will not be officially disclosed until the president issues an executive order putting the change into effect in full. According to the precedent set by previous presidents, the executive order will likely be announced prior to the closing this year.
